Mr. Hughes completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Kentucky, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the National Business Honorary. After completing his undergraduate studies, he attended law school at Drake University graduating in 1978. He is licensed in the state of Illinois and has also been admitted to practice law in the U.S. District Court of Central and Southern Illinois as well as the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He has appeared pro hac vice in several jurisdictions.
For the last several years, Mr. Hughes has focused his practice in defense litigation, primarily medical malpractice cases. He has experience in litigating cases in Illinois, where he aggressively pursues the defense of physicians and other healthcare providers in professional liability claims. He has extensive expertise in defending physicians regarding all types of professional malpractice litigation including claims ranging from birth traumas to fractures. In addition to his medical malpractice defense work, Mr. Hughes has extensive experience in product liability, personal injury, and commercial litigation. When Mr. Hughes is not litigating, he actively pursues his other professional passions as a corporate business attorney and estate planner.
In pursuit of his interest in education, Mr. Hughes is a frequent speaker on significant topics related to current legal and medical issues and on issues as they relate to defending physicians at trial. Recently, he presented "Risk Management in Long-Term Care" and "Defense of Shoulder Dystocia Malpractice Claims." He has presented his lectures at the Illinois State Bar Association, the Illinois State Radiological Society, Defense Research Institute (DRI), and also in conjunction with ISMIE Mutual Insurance Company and The Doctors Company.
Mr. Hughes has been acknowledged for his accomplishments by a variety of civic and professional organizations which include recognition as an AV (highest possible rating) peer rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell and is an Advisory Committee member of the Illinois Leading Lawyers. In addition to those accomplishments, he is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and Litigation Counsel of America, a member of Illinois Defense Council (I.D.C.) and the International Association of Defense Counsel (I.A.D.C.). Mr. Hughes has also received the Chicago Lawyer "Top Lawyers in Illinois" designation for a number of years and is recognized as an "Illinois Super Lawyer."
